Who is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with a specialization in psychiatry, the branch of medicine dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Psychiatrists evaluate both the psychological and physiological aspects of these conditions and possess the expertise to diagnose and treat them effectively.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and treat mental health conditions with medications and other medical treatments. They handle more complex cases that may require such interventions.

A psychologist has a PhD in clinical psychology and focuses on treating mental health conditions through psychotherapy (talk therapy). They cannot prescribe medication.

What does a psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist diagnoses and treats mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Like other medical doctors, they conduct medical and psychological tests, discuss symptoms, and review medical and family history to diagnose conditions. Treatment plans may include psychotherapy, medication, and other medical treatments.

When should I see a psychiatrist?

While self-diagnosing specific mental health conditions is not recommended, it is important to be aware of behaviors, emotions, and thought patterns that may be unhealthy and disruptive to your daily life.

Seeking help can be challenging and overwhelming, but it is crucial. Mental well-being is as important as your physical health. Mental health episodes can negatively impact your quality of life.

Your primary healthcare provider may refer you to a psychiatrist based on your symptoms, or you can directly consult a psychiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.

Consider consulting a psychiatrist or informing your primary healthcare provider if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Inability to manage or control your emotions
Continuous or frequent episodes of anger or rage
Excessive or irrational fears
Engaging in risky behavior
Persistent worrying and/or sadness
Significant changes in sleep patterns
Substance use
Eating disorders
Declining performance in school or work
Withdrawal from social situations
Thoughts of self-harm

Remember, there is no shame in having or seeking help for a mental health condition. The sooner you seek assistance and treatment, the sooner you will feel better.
